September ‘26 Cover work: Memory & Punishment by Janice Laujan

A garden built indoors. Shoes come off at the door, and the floor gives underfoot, purple and undulating, under dimmed light and a low haze. Contact produces sound. Every movement enters the acoustic ecology and alters it. The work registers each visitor as material.

Janice Laujan takes the title literally. Remembering functions as a social mechanism, regressive and ecstatic at once, and the exhibition holds the position that difficult recollection can be inhabited rather than closed. Shame and grief usually stay private. Here they are given architecture.

Performing bodies move through as living sculptures, following their own logic against the landscape. Nerve, Karen Yu, Gold Mountain and Kelvin T lead hour-long interventions at fixed moments in an otherwise continuous run.

Lebeau runs his photographs through deliberately modified printers and disrupts others at the level of code, working with the resulting distortion rather than correcting it. For over a decade she has been merging the technosphere with the biosphere, in what she terms a « biopolitics of the senses”, an exploration of how sensory experience is shaped by cultural and biological forces. (text @estherschippergallery)

Medium: the body past what performance usually permits. Stunt riding, aerial rigging, live tattooing, surgery on stage. Her casts are all-female and trained in disciplines borrowed from circus, sport, and medicine.

Medium: noise and an LED wall. For DESASTRES he performed for two hundred days straight in the Australian Pavilion, using an electric guitar as a signal generator into mass amplification, triggering a deluge of randomly generated images onto a floor-to-ceiling screen.

Medium: living systems. Bees nesting in the head of a reclining nude, dogs with one leg painted pink, aquariums, bacteria, fictional weather. He builds ecosystems and lets them behave without him.

Medium: objects left to make their own sound. Porcelain bowls drift in a pool of water and collide at random; zebra finches land on electric guitars and play them.

Cecilia Vicuña @ceciliavicuna_premionacional
Medium: unspun wool, debris, and things meant to disappear. Her precarios are small assemblages of found material left on beaches for the tide to take. She has been making them since 1966. Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, Venice 2022.

Raphaël Emine @raphael.emine
Medium: 3D-printed ceramic, and the insects that move in. His sculptures contain hidden tunnels, chambers, and lattices designed as habitats — placed outdoors and left to be colonised by bees, moss, bacteria, and plants. Once installed, he says, he has no real control over the work.

Urs Fischer @chaosursfischer
Medium: wax. He casts figures (friends, art historical statues, himself) as candles, lights them on opening night, and
