Cultural Amsterdam: Notes by Elina Lans-Timofeev
A new series shaped by the intuition of artists, curators, and cultural figures in the world’s most vital cities. The places they return to — from major institutions to whispered local gems.
First stop: Amsterdam, through the lens of Elina Lans Timofeev, artist and founder of studio elínalans. From her quiet atelier, Elina transforms reclaimed metals and ethically sourced stones into sculptural, intimate heirlooms. A practice rooted in heritage, carried by hand.
She shared with us her favorite spots — secret and not-so-secret — offering a portrait of Amsterdam in her voice and through the lens of her camera.
Coming soon: Paris, Madrid and Marrakesh.

As an immigrant in Amsterdam, there often is no sense of grounding. I search weekly for what’s happening in town and put together a cultural agenda — this way, I find my seat at the table of cultural happenings. I take an active approach to local art life and share this agenda with friends on social media. I want people to feel they are always a part of these happenings.
There are a few places that have my heart. With these, I don’t even need to look into the events in detail — whatever they’re hosting, I’m down with it.
Stedelijk Museum and their Buro Stedelijk — a young platform curating “manifestations.” A beautiful space, part of the main museum. I go for the community-building events and to discover what’s new in the local art scene. Every manifestation is a celebration!
Young Stedelijk is museum’s initiative, a social/cultural club for your professionals 18-40 y.o. to see behind-the-scenes of Museum, and beyond. Their program is fantastic, I love the events, the opening parties, the visits to artist studios and etc.

Oude kerk — a platform for contemporary art in a 7-century-old church. I love their sound performances (“silences”), usually taking place, unconventionally, at 8 AM on Fridays.
ITA stands for International Theater Amsterdam, a very special place with a female director. I go there to see Isabelle Huppert, NDT1, and the upcoming Julidans — excellent agenda!

Homecoming Gallery - a female-led gallery with amazing curation and events. The location is very special to me too; it just feels great.
Rijksmuseum Jewelry Department. I skip the main program at Rijks and head straight to the Jewelry section, tucked next to medieval royal lingerie and glasswork. I just meditate there, especially when I feel low on creative energy.
