In dialogue with Lingrou Xie @lingrouxie

« I don’t really want the painting to tell the viewer a complete or definite story. I think things are multifaceted, and emotions can be complicated, even contradictory. Layering is a way of preserving that complexity. »

On memory as something constantly rewritten, what Xi’an and Beijing each gave her and whether personal painting can become a collective record.

On the occasion of @contemporaryistanbul Contemporary Istanbul, on view from 23 to 27 September, we met with Wai Kung, curator, filmmaker and cultural practitioner. We spoke about In the Wake, her project within Focus Asia. At its centre is Taiping Cao’s No Man’s Land: footprints lifted off the ground and suspended through the space.

We also spoke about translocality, and what happens to a work when it enters a new context.

At Contemporary Istanbul she is guest curator and Ambassador for Berlin and Greater China.
