Sceners Gallery

Une autre scène, exhibition view, Sceners Gallery

Closing Paris Design Week 2025, Fvtvrist visited a new design gallery-to-follow in the 11th arrondissement. Opened in winter 2024 inside an abandoned building, previously a toy factory, Sceners Gallery now inhabits a vast raw space with brutalist touches and hidden snakes of staircases. Dedicated to second-market pieces at the intersection of art and design, the gallery sources and exhibits rare works from over 20 creators. Among its artists: Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, Rick Owens, Pierre Jeanneret, Rei Kawakubo, Paolo Buffa, and many more, ranging from modernist names written into art history to contemporary avant-garde visionaries, all highly sought after on the market.

Exhibitions change every 3–6 months, while the curatorial approach remains subtle and profound. At its heart is the mixing of historic masters with contemporary and experimental works. Sculptural design in these walls merges comfort and discomfort; the gallery plays with “anachronism,” bringing together works from different eras and styles. All the pieces are meticulously researched by its founders: "Every aspect you perceive—sight, sound, touch, or sense—has been meticulously sought for. This process led us to deeper and more searching questions, new sources of knowledge; nothing has been left to the unknown."

Currently on view, the show ‘Une autre scène’ offers a panorama of decorative arts through an expanded lens of the 20th century, spanning from 1899 to 2011. Our breath was taken more than once during our visit.

Ugo La Pietra — Messincena (cherry wood)
A singular figure in Italian postwar design, La Pietra stands at the intersection of radical experimentation. Messincena is a precious example of his “territorial” furnishings—conceptual and sensitive works that map the emotional geographies of cities.

Eugenio Quarti — Vitrine Cabinet
An Italian master whose works are held in major collections such as the Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. This cabinet showcases his unparalleled craftsmanship, uniting the warmth and sensuality of different woods with the interplay of light on textured glass and mother-of-pearl inlay.

Marzio Cecchi — Serpente Sofa (black vinyl)
A charged and forceful piece, its serpentine form and dense black color conjure associations with the slick texture of oil. Both electric and unsettling, it is a striking work of Cecchi, an icon of experimental Italian design.

While Fvtvrist seeks to find new players in the field who define what the gallery can be, how design can be perceived in the contemporary art context, and curatorial ways of exposing it, Sceners hits all the boxes.
