Rex & Edna Volcan
Offline: The Girl Who Stayed Between Worlds

5 December 2025 – 5 January 2026
Nine Fish Art Gallery, Mumbai

Artura Spaces, in partnership with Nine Fish Art Gallery, presents Offline: The Girl Who Stayed Between Worlds, the India debut of Rex & Edna Volcan — the Dutch–Colombian artistic duo whose work was featured at the 2024 Venice Biennale.

Working across photography and painting, Volcan is known for constructing emotionally charged visual narratives around displacement, memory, and the act of seeing. This exhibition marks the next chapter of their Offline project, following the critically noted Offline: Refugee Remembrance Wall shown in Venice. While the Biennale work gave faces to the forgotten, the Mumbai exhibition shifts focus toward imagination, agency, and self-construction.

At the heart of the exhibition is a fictional protagonist — The Girl with the Thousand Hiding Places. Once defined by survival, she evolves into an active author of her reality. Her recurring gesture — looking through her fingers — transforms from a protective instinct into a deliberate lens, reframing the world through selective vision. The resulting works are not illustrations of her story; they are the worlds she builds between memory and reinvention.

Volcan’s signature aesthetic — described as “blurred, unresolved, still loading” — unfolds through layered paintings and large-scale photographic works. Saturated colour fields, often evoking Rothko-like atmospheres, create spaces of pause, suspension, and interior refuge. Each work operates as a threshold where past and future momentarily coexist.

Curated by Prachi Kapoor with Dr. Anurag Kanoria, Offline: The Girl Who Stayed Between Worlds positions displacement not as a condition to escape, but as a space of creative possibility. Presented in Mumbai — a city shaped by constant movement — the exhibition speaks to a global condition: the experience of living between geographies, identities, and timelines. In Volcan’s world, refuge is no longer a place one reaches. It is something one constructs — through perception, memory, and the courage to keep seeing.
